In our collective fantasy robots have acquired human qualities. From HAL in 2001, A Space Odyssey to Data of Star Trek: The Next Generation and the Terminator, robots that act human have captured the public imagination. In reality technology serves us without emotion or volition. Instead of guardians and companions we have created functional robots; vacuum cleaners, assembly lines and artbots.

Present a series of small 2'x2'x2' robots, each with their own dysfunction. Technology is often seen as a form of perfection. These robots are performance artists and can be seen as self referential stand up comics who remind us that machines are only as good as the people who make them.

Imbued with human qualities, each robot requires audience participation to (dys)function. Each sets up an expectation that is met in an unexpected way.

1) suicide bot, This robot will have a sign stating to the audience: Please plug in to start installation. Upon the Attendee's plugging it in, the bot 'wakes up' and then unplugs itself.

2) out of order bot, This robot wants to be touched and has a sign saying so, however, when an Attendee touches it, the robot physically breaks and replaces the 'please touch' request with an out of order sign ... and after a few minutes, resets.

3) i'm not finished bot, This robot is contained inside a box on a pedestal. The box directs the Attendees to look inside. When they try to open the box, an arm from inside slams the cover shut and says ?This art project isn't done yet, come back next year.

4) grumpy bot, This robot doesn't want to be bothered. Get too close and the bot will verbally assault you with phrases like:

Leave me alone, please leave!
Don't wave at me.
I'm busy here.
Why are youlooking at me??

The robots in You, Robot are more interested serving themselves than anyone or anything else.
